He Orders Your Steps

Scripture

"The Lord directs our steps, so why try to understand everything along the way?" -Proverbs 20:24

I used to struggle deeply with the unknown. I felt like I needed to understand everything and map out every next step. That sense of control made me feel secure, but it left very little room for real trust in the Lord. I would plan my own path and then give God the credit afterward, as if I were doing Him a favor. In reality, that mindset only revealed emotional gaps and a heart that hadn’t fully surrendered to His plans for my life. God—the sovereign King—is the One who directs the outcome of our lives, not us. We cannot predict our future or control every detail. That’s why the scripture asks, “Why try to understand everything along the way?” We must learn to be at peace with not having all the answers. Despite what modern culture tells us, we have never been the authors of our own stories. God has always held the pen.

This means we place our trust in the Author and Finisher of our faith rather than relying on ourselves. We can rest in the truth that God is in control of all things and that He governs the outcome of our efforts. This should bring us comfort because it lifts the weight off our shoulders. Beloved, He knows your end from your beginning, and He understands the “why” behind every situation in your life. Even when we gain insight into our own hearts, there will always be blind spots—things we don’t notice and patterns we don’t recognize. But God sees it all. Wisdom begins with understanding that we were never meant to be in the driver’s seat. You may remember the old bumper sticker that said, “Jesus is my co‑pilot.” The truth is, Jesus is not the co‑pilot—He is the pilot. Our role is to surrender and allow Him to lead the way. Why? Because the Father has written our story. This scripture invites us to trust God’s plans even when the path feels unclear or confusing.

Beloved, maybe life feels uncertain and chaotic right now. Perhaps you're in a season of transition and your next steps are unclear. Today's scripture reminds us that it is not our responsibility to chart our own course. We can cease striving to figure it all out and instead, we can surrender our anxious hearts to Him. Allow His word to reassure us that He is in full control of our lives. Let go of the need to author your own story. We don't have to micromanage every detail of our lives. Let's step back, breathe, and place the reins back over to Him.

Prayer

Father, we step out of the way so that you can have full control of our lives. We trust in your plans for our lives. In Jesus' name. Amen
