Giving Honor

Scripture

Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. -Romans 12:10

The Lord has called His children to honor one another. One of the beautiful marks of a Christ‑centered community is the way we honor one another. In the Hebrew language, 'honor' is Kavod, which means "weight, glory, dignity, implying value or substance. This means that we should develop deep familial bonds with each other. We should be intentional to recognize the value and worth in others. Honor signifies treating each other with importance and dignity. It's deeper than cordiality, in that we actively encourage each other through our words and our actions. Many people handle their relationships in terms of reciprocity. They are only inclined to show love or favor once they've received it. This is not what it means to honor. When we honor each other, we create an atmosphere where love grows, unity strengthens, and the presence of God is welcomed.

Our Lord is a part of a community of love with His Son, Jesus, and His Holy Spirit, and He's called us to live in the same manner. Apart from embracing on Sundays at church, we are to build each other up. We can encourage people by explaining how we see God working in their lives, pointing out their growth and faith. This is helpful because we are all striving, and to hear someone acknowledge our growth can fuel our resolve to stay in the fight. We also express our gratitude to those who have been instrumental in our growth in the Lord. Proverbs 27:17 states "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another." We  honor others by protecting their reputation. When a negative word is spoken about your brother or sister, refuse to join in. Counter the conversation by speaking well of the person even when they are not around.

Beloved, honoring our brothers and sisters involves selflessness. Put other's needs and dignity above your own. Pour out love and appreciation by acknowledging that they were made in God's image, and highlight their unique gifts and talents. Regularly pray for one another's needs, burdens, and spiritual growth. Actively listen when someone is speaking. This  shows them that they have value in our lives. Finally, share with others how God is working in your life as a way to inspire and encourage them to seek a deeper relationship with Christ. May we be believers who honor freely, love deeply, and reflect Jesus in all we do.

Prayer

Father, thank you for your grace and sacrificial love towards us. Show us how to honor and see the value in the brothers and sisters in our daily encounters. Amen.
