Restoring Relationship

Scripture

But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all wickedness. -1 John 1:9

I grew up hearing this scripture quoted frequently when the discussion of sin came up in Christian conversation. It was given as consolation for the one who sinned and fell short of God's glory. I also observed that this scripture was quoted as a scapegoat for individuals who continually repeated the same sin. I did not have a understanding of 1 John 1:9. The truth is, I did not comprehend the damage of sin in my life as a believer. I was only told not to sin growing up as a believer, but there was a deeper part of that conversation that was left out.

As I grew spiritually, I began to understand how vital it was to have daily fellowship with God, the Father. When we sin, we are no longer in fellowship with Him. The work of Jesus on the cross doesn't only deal with the guilt of sin. Though some believers mishandle His sacrifice as a "get out of hell" card, like the Monopoly game. Jesus' work on the cross also deals with the stain of sin that hinders our relationship with God. Beloved, it's always been about our relationship with Him. We have to be continually cleansed so that we can enjoy continual fellowship with Him.

We have to deal with our problem with sin through the blood of Jesus. This is the only way we can come to fellowship with God. God abhors sin, and we must feel the same way about our sin. Does that mean we'll never sin again? No.  When the scripture tells us to 'confess' our sins, it's not a one-time thing. We have to keep on confessing. Let's be honest with God about our sin and our struggles with it. Beloved, don't let your guilt and shame keep you from confessing your sins before God. He is the one who convicts. He is urging the confession because the sin is a hindrance to our fellowship with Him. Let's receive forgiveness and cleansing for our relationship with God. Your relationship with Him is personal, so make your confession personal. Be specific and tell Him everything. He is faithful to forgive us because of the work of the cross.

Prayer

Father, we confess our sin to you. We repent of our sins and turn away from them, seeking your forgiveness and guidance. Thank you for your promise of forgiveness through the sacrifice of your Son, Jesus Christ. Help us to walk in your ways, and to live a life that pleases you, in Jesus' name. Amen
