Scripture
"Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you forgive." -Colossians 3:13
"Forgiveness is the key to your freedom, daughter." The Lord whispered those words to my heart one day while I sat in His presence. He was addressing the unforgiveness still in my heart. Honestly, after receiving so much revelation on my past, I thought I had forgiven all there was to forgive. I knew, however, that if God was mentioning it, then unforgiveness was there.
Can your whole heart belong to God when it's occupied with unforgiveness? I believe the aswer is no. Unforgiveness holds us captive to the situation, despite how long ago it happened. When something has been done to us, we want justice for our hearts. "How could I forgive her for what she said? How could I forgive him for what he did? How could I let go of how they made me feel?" Those and other phrases tend to echo in our hearts, but the truth is, Beloved, our hearts are healed when we choose to forgive. Are their sins bigger than yours? Are they not worthy to receive forgiveness as you received? We walk out of the jail cell we hold ourselves captive in when we forgive.
One of my continual prayers to God is for Him to search my heart and thoughts deeply and expose what is there. I ask Him to expose what is not like Him. I'm grateful that He honors this prayer in my life. If He doesn't expressly say what's there such, as unforgiveness, He exposes what's there through situations. Either way, it's for the cultivation of a healed heart. This means we continually forgive. Beloved, we cannot show God's love to others when we walk in unforgiveness. Jesus said to love the Lord with all your heart, soul, and mind. He also commanded us to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. (Matthew 22:37;39). Will you let go of unforgiveness and allow His love to flow freely in your heart today?
Prayer
Father, we come before you seeking your grace and mercy. We thank you for your unconditional love and forgiveness, especially the forgiveness you have extended to us. Help us to forgive those who have hurt us, just as you have forgiven us. May our hearts be filled with compassion and understanding, as you have filled our souls. In Jesus' name. Amen
