Shaping Your Life

Scripture

Instead, shape your lives to become like the Holy One who called you. -1 Peter 1:15

As I enter different stages in my life, my schedule changes. Many factors contribute to this, including extra-curricular activities of my teenager, career, ministry responsibilities, and even school. The list can go on and on. My response to my changing schedule is important. I had to learn how to organize my life to maximize my effectiveness in my life. Life can become so hectic with endless tasks and responsibilities that if we allow them, they become excuses to not show up in our fellowship with the Lord.

One morning, I lamented to the Holy Spirit about how busy life had gotten for me and that I felt like I wasn't cultivating our relationship like I had in previous years. He asked me, "What are you doing around 9 pm?" Around that time, I am wrapping up the day and getting ready for bed. He said to me, "Daughter, shape your life so that you can be with Me." These words were so simple, yet freeing. As disciples of Jesus Christ, we should be with Him, to be like Him, to do what He did. The Holy Spirit taught me how to shape and organize my life so that I can have more of God. Every aspect of our Christian life has to be intentional. We have to create space in our lives for God. This relationship is the most important we'll ever have. All other healthy relationships hinge on our fellowship with the Father.

There are certain practices that I am intentional about doing daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly. They all lead to a deeper fellowship and walk as a disciple of Jesus Christ. For example, daily, I set aside time to intercede for others and spend time listening to God's voice. Daily, I also have technology-free time before going to bed and meditate on a psalm. Weekly, I set aside one day to spend a much longer time in prayer than I do on other days and express myself creatively through writing and sketching. I know the last part may have some scratching their heads, but God cares about what I care about. My creativity comes from Him. Monthly and/or quarterly, I've decided to take a sabbath. During that time, I'll focus on my family and continue to cultivate my connection with the Father. Beloved, these are my examples. Organize your life to create space for God, so that you can be with Jesus, be like Him, and do what He did. This is the only way we'll do greater works than these.

Prayer

Father, show us how to prioritize our relationship with you. We ask that your Holy Spirit provide practical ways for us to make space for you in our lives. We desire to put you first, Lord. Help us to walk as true disciples of your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
