Letting Go of the Old Story

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. The old has gone, the new is here!-2 Corinthians 5:17

Beloved, there comes a moment in our walk with Christ when this verse stops being something we quote and becomes something we live. I remember seasons where I still felt emotionally attached to the old version of myself — old habits, old fears, old wounds, old thinking. Even though God had declared me new, I didn’t always feel new. But the Holy Spirit began to show me that God speaks to the person He has already chosen. He sees the version of me that He ordained before the foundation of the world. He sees the new creation even when I’m still wrestling with remnants of the old. And He gently reminded me: "You cannot become who I’ve called you to be while holding on to who you used to be".

The moment we are in Christ, the old is over. That means our old mindset, old patterns, old trauma, and old story no longer define us. But sometimes we defend what God is trying to deliver us from. At some point, we must outgrow the struggles that keep us stagnant. God admonished Joshua to be strong and courageous as he led Israel into promise. He is saying the same to us. We have stayed in places of lack, insecurity, and pain long enough. With His help, we must evolve into who He has called us to be. Transformation is painful because growth costs us everything. Trials refine us, mature us, and prepare us for greater. Abram had to become Abraham. His name changed, his direction changed, and his mind changed. David was anointed king long before he sat on the throne — his trials shaped him into the man who could carry the crown. We cannot do great things for God and remain the same. The Word of God becomes a mirror, revealing who we truly are. And when our reflection doesn’t match the Word, courage calls us to surrender the old and embrace the new. Your identity in Christ is not a future hope — it is a present reality.

Beloved, God is calling you to release what was and embrace what is. Surrender the attitudes, habits, thought patterns, and fruitless ways that keep you tied to the old version of yourself. Face your fears. Embrace the uncomfortable. You cannot pray for God’s best while clinging to old perspectives. You cannot walk in newness while defending what God has already buried. You are no longer who you were — and it’s time to live like it. Step boldly into the new creation He has declared you to be.

Prayer Moment

Father, help us to let go of who we used to be and walk in the truth of who You say we are. Sever every tie to the old man so we can fulfill Your purpose for our lives. In Jesus’ name, amen.
