Sweet Communion With the Trinity

Scripture

“We saw it, we heard it, and now we're telling you so that you can experience it along with us—this experience of communion with the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ.” -1 John 1:3

The word communion in this passage is also fellowship. The Greek word koinonia speaks of sharing a common life, a deep bond, and a shared participation. A few years ago, I woke up one morning and laid still in my bed, sensing the presence of the Lord filling the room. Because His presence encompasses the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, I knew I had the audience of the Trinity. In that moment I whispered, “I feel like You all accept me. It’s as if I’ve been let in by You.” I didn’t fully understand the depth of what I was saying until later. I had, in fact, been welcomed into the love and fellowship that already existed between the Father and the Son. By the work of the Holy Spirit, I was invited into their shared life — their communion, their affection, their unity. The beauty of this fellowship is that I get to share my life with Jesus, and He shares His life with me. And this is true for every believer. We have been invited into the life of the One who saved us.

John writes, “so that you can experience it along with us.” Fellowship with God is not meant to be private or exclusive — it is meant to be shared. People come to experience relationship with God through their relationship with His saints. True fellowship with God produces true fellowship with others. Think about it, Beloved: genuine, honest, Spirit‑filled fellowship draws you to others and draws others to you. When we walk in communion with God, His life flows through us. We share our lives with Him, and He shares His life with us. I remember when God poured the oil of joy over my life (Hebrews 1:9). The more time I spent around Jesus, the more like Him I became. That joy wasn’t rooted in circumstances — it was rooted in communion. External pressures tried daily to steal my joy, but joy anchored in fellowship cannot be shaken. If we ever lose our joy, it is a tremendous loss. We must do everything we can to draw near again, because joy is the fruit of shared life with the Father and the Son. Communion with God is not a concept — it is a lived relationship.

Beloved, know today that as a Christian, you have been invited into something precious: a relationship of love, fellowship, and shared life with God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ. You have been welcomed into their communion — their joy, their unity, their affection. You are not on the outside looking in. You are not tolerated. You are not merely observed. You have been invited in. You have been welcomed close. You have been given access to their shared life. Oh, sweet communion.

Reflection Pause: Take a quiet moment with the Lord. Do you approach Him as someone who has been welcomed close, or do you still feel as though you are standing outside looking in? Where is God inviting you to deepen your fellowship with Him so that His joy becomes the anchor of your daily life?

Prayer Moment

Father, how wonderful it is to be invited into sweet communion with You. We accept Your invitation to share our lives with You and to experience the joy that comes from You sharing Your life with us. Teach us how to engage with You in deeper fellowship so that others may be drawn to You through our lives. In Jesus’ name, amen.
