Take the Limits Off

Scripture

The the Lord said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh? Why did she say, 'Can an old woman like me have a baby?' Is there anything too hard for the Lord? I will return about this time next year, and Sarah will have a son" -Genesis 18:13-14

Beloved, the Scriptures overflow with reminders of God’s power, His sovereignty, and His limitless ability. We proclaim these truths in our churches, in our prayers, and in our conversations with one another. Yet there are moments—quiet, subtle moments—when we place limits around who God truly is. It is not always rooted in unbelief, for we genuinely believe He is powerful, all‑knowing, just, and overflowing with love. But our spiritual formation, our lived experiences, and even our theological frameworks can shape a finite understanding of an infinite God. Without realizing it, we begin to relate to Him only within the boundaries of what feels familiar or manageable.

Reflection Pause: Where have you unintentionally limited God based on your own understanding of Him?

The verse above reveals how easily we place a finite lens on an infinite God. When the Lord promised Abraham and Sarah a child, Sarah responded not with faith but with laughter—an outward sign of inward doubt. Her natural reasoning told her that bearing a child at her age was absurd. Our hearts often take in subtle, distorted ideas without us even noticing. Like Sarah, through culture, upbringing, and personal experiences, we see the world—and even God—through lenses that were never meant to shape our faith. But He is not confined by our understanding. He is not restricted by our imagination. He is the God who transcends every boundary we build, the God who invites us to know Him beyond what we have known before.

Reflection Pause: Where might God be inviting you to expand your understanding of His power, His presence, or His ability?

Beloved, God is gently confronting the limits of our human perspective. He longs for us to walk fully in the purpose He designed for our lives. His plans are always greater than anything we could imagine, because He moves on an infinite plane while we see through a finite one. If we don’t allow the Holy Spirit to reshape how we think about God’s nature, our limited perspective will keep us from truly knowing Him. Let His Spirit lift every boundary you’ve placed around who He is, and allow Him to expand your understanding of His greatness.

Journal Reflection: Take a quiet moment with the Lord and write, acknowledging where you’ve placed limits on God and affirm your desire to trust His infinite nature more fully.

Prayer Moment

Father transform our finite perspective of you so that we may fully grasp the reality of who you are. Amen.
