Scripture
So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won't be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two factors are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. -Galatians 5: 16-17
Our spirit is designed to be the driving force of our being. It is what connects us to God and is meant to lead our soul—our mind, will, and emotions—and even our physical body. Yet because of our spiritual formation, many of us have been shaped more by experiences, encounters, and decisions than by the Holy Spirit Himself. Some of these influences were within our control, and others were not, but all of them have contributed to who we are today. When we receive Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within us and begins the lifelong work of sanctification. Your spirit is always in agreement with the Holy Spirit, but His influence in your life is directly connected to your willingness to yield to Him. For many, the soul has been in the driver’s seat for years. But as children of God, our spirit must lead—not our emotions or self‑will. Submission and obedience work together; if you try to do what is right without surrender, you will meet resistance. The flesh resists righteousness, especially when it has been in control for a long time.
Reflection Pause: Where in your life do you notice your emotions or will taking the lead instead of your spirit?
Don’t be discouraged—resistance is not always a sign of failure. In fact, it often reveals that you are moving in the right direction. Resistance exposes the areas of your life that still need to yield to the Holy Spirit. It often feels like an internal tug‑of‑war between your higher calling and the habits that have shaped you. Resistance may look like the Holy Spirit prompting you to shift a relationship, change careers, or step into something new, yet you find yourself busying your time with lesser tasks to avoid the deeper call. It may look like overthinking and craving a step‑by‑step plan when the Spirit is nudging you toward trust. When you commit to a spiritually aligned life, resistance may show up as old habits resurfacing, coping mechanisms returning, or even physical fatigue and unexplained anxiety. The key to overcoming is surrender—yielding your will to the Holy Spirit’s leading.
Reflection Pause: What forms of resistance do you notice when the Holy Spirit prompts you toward growth or obedience?
Beloved, let your spirit take its rightful place as the guiding force of your life. Yield to the Holy Spirit and allow Him to lead you into the will of the Father. You will feel resistance from your flesh, but that resistance is a signal to lean in, not pull back. God honors obedience, and He will bless you as you follow His plan and respond to the call upon your life.
Reflection Pause: What is one area where God is calling you to yield more deeply today?
Journal Reflection: How has your past shaped your spiritual formation, and what needs to be reshaped by the Spirit? Where do you sense the Holy Spirit inviting you to surrender?
Prayer Moment
Holy Spirit, I yield myself to You. Lead my spirit, guide my steps, and shape my desires. Expose the areas where my flesh resists Your work, and give me the strength to surrender fully. Align my heart with the will of the Father. Let obedience flow from a place of trust, and let my life reflect Your transforming power. Amen.
