Scripture
We are human, but we do not wage war as humans do. We use God's mighty weapons, not worldly weapons to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and destroy false arguments. - 2 Corinthians 10:3-4
One of the greatest weapons the adversary uses against us is the lies he whispers into our minds. He doesn’t speak in strange or unfamiliar ways—he speaks right in the middle of our situations, using thoughts that feel ordinary and believable. If we are not discerning, we can easily accept these lies as truth.
Pause and reflect: What recent thought felt like “your own voice,” but carried fear, shame, or discouragement? You can explore this more through recognizing spiritual lies.
The danger of his tactic is that he works on the subconscious level of our thinking. He doesn’t come with a different voice. His lies sound a lot like our own thoughts. He gathers most of his ammunition from the words we speak about our circumstances—words shaped by fear, anxiety, stress, or confusion. From those confessions, he begins to build mental arguments. He forms patterns of thinking deep within our subconscious, and over time, those patterns become strongholds that shape how we see ourselves, God, and the world around us. Eventually, we find ourselves held captive by the very strongholds we never realized were forming.
Journaling moment: Write down one negative pattern of thinking you’ve noticed in your life. Where do you think it began? You can go deeper through understanding spiritual strongholds.
As Paul explained, we are limited by our physical existence and human vulnerability. Because of this, we cannot place our trust in our own knowledge or reasoning. There is always a larger spiritual reality at work in our lives. We are contending with spiritual forces in the unseen realm, and for that reason, we must confront these forces with spiritual weapons, not carnal ones. We do not fight using worldly tactics. Instead, we are empowered by God through His Word, prayer, and the power of the Holy Spirit. These are the weapons we employ to tear down the strongholds the enemy attempts to build in our minds. Strongholds shape the way we show up in life. When a stronghold has been established within us, it is evidence that we have surrendered our God‑given freedom in exchange for the enemy’s bondage.
So, Beloved, how do we reclaim our freedom from the strongholds that have held us captive? First, we must recognize the deceptive patterns of the enemy. He often uses the same tactics repeatedly because they work. We must identify the root of the lie he planted in our minds and expose it to the truth of God’s Word. Then, we take every thought captive that exalts itself against the knowledge of God. While we cannot control every thought that enters our minds, we can choose to reject the ones that contradict God’s promises and replace them with truth. This is where speaking Scripture becomes powerful—declaring what God has said over what the enemy suggests.
Journaling moment: What lie have you believed about yourself, your situation, or your future? Write a Scripture that speaks directly against a lie you’ve believed. Declare it over yourself.
Finally, we must protect our minds, just as Paul instructs in Romans 12:2: “Do not conform to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” This means being mindful of what we listen to, what we read, and what we allow our eyes to take in. If we do not wage war the way humans do, then neither does the enemy. He uses the things we engage with to infiltrate our thinking. Remember, we must remain vigilant and sober‑minded (1 Peter 5:8), recognizing the enemy’s tactics before they take root. This level of discernment comes through active submission and a deepening relationship with the Lord.
Prayer moment: “Father, renew my mind daily. Help me stay alert, discerning, and anchored in Your truth. Break every stronghold that has taken root in my life.”
