Scripture

Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. -Lamentations 2:22-23

The longer I know my daughter and watch her grow, the more I love her. As I see her life unfold before my eyes, the more precious she becomes to me. My love for her is deep and protective and because the bond between us is deeply intertwined, she could never be forgotten or abandoned by me. I will always have a physical and visceral response to her well-being. We share DNA and even though I no longer carry her in my womb, I still carry her cells within my body. Our love for each other is always growing, developing, and evolving. This kind of bond and connection that I've described is likened to the mercies of God. There are several words for mercy in the Hebrew language, but for the scripture above, the Hebrew word is, racham. It means to feel compassion, to be tender, often involving the idea of a mother's womb.

The mercy of God signifies His deep loyal, covenant love for us. His love is safe and compassionate. Just as the mother's womb is a private place of safety and protection, God's mercy is the same. It shields us from all harm. Just as a womb provides life, nourishment, and growth, God's mercy sustains and develops His people. Like the mother's love, God's love is passionate and active in our lives. Like a mother's unconditional love towards her child, God's mercy offers us forgiveness. His mercy is unmatched and never ending. The beautiful promise of this scripture is that His mercy is renewed daily like the morning sun. Every new day brings an opportunity to experience His nurturing care.

Beloved, this scripture is a testament to God's consistent character. Despite human frailty and harsh circumstances, God's mercy brings hope. Live out this day knowing that you are deeply loved and cared for by the Lord. Allow His consistent nature to cultivate a trust in Him that brings you hope and assurance in the midst of your situations. Because of Yahweh's great love, we are not consumed.

Prayer

Father, we thank you for your unending mercies and great faithfulness for each new day. Help us to not be consumed by yesterday's failures, but focus on your unending love for today. In Jesus' name. Amen
