Delight In the Word

Scripture

My passion and delight is in your word, for I love what you say to me. I long for more revelation of your truth, for I love the light your of your word as I meditate on your decrees. -Psalm 119:47-48

The word of God is the foundation and source of our lives as disciples of Christ. Hidden within each page are mysteries, commands, and revelation to those who would read. Years ago, I casually asked God to change my relationship with the scripture, and He answered my prayer. I’ve always read the word of God, but I sensed that there was something lacking. A few weeks after that prayer, I was praying and I was caught up in a vision. I saw myself standing in front of a table with an open Bible on it. Suddenly, the Bible lifted off the table, and the entirety of the Bible entered my heart. Right after that I saw literal words coming out of my mouth, then flowing out were swords, and then fire. Not shortly after that I had begun to feel that the Lord was nudging me to study the scripture in a scholarly manner. To confirm this, He put teachers and tools in my path so that I could study the scripture in this way. Indeed, my relationship with word of God had changed.

The writer of this psalm showed that delighting in God’s word was a choice. He didn’t wait for a feeling to come over him. It is important to note that while I prayed for my relationship with His word to deepen, I was already actively engaging in the word. Beloved, engaging in the scripture should be a choice, an act of your will. It’s not something you check off your Christian to-do list. The word contains the blueprint for living in the kingdom of God. If our reading, studying, and meditating is sporadic, it will show. You won’t have enough in your reserve for the situations you face. How can you speak the word over the situations in your life if you fail to engage in it? We are encouraged to use the Bible to guide our prayers. This will be difficult for the believer who rarely reads, study, and meditate on the scripture.

The writer emphasized the joyful and passionate engagement with God’s Word through delighting in it, actively seeking its truth, and meditating on its decrees. He had a deep love for the Word of God, and it was not only manifested in his delight, but honor and time and energy spend with God’s word. Beloved this kind of desire for the Word comes only from a deep relationship with the Lord. Let us examine our engagement with the scripture today. Are we sporadic in our pursuit of it, or do we engage it with fervor?

Prayer

Father, we thank you for your Word that gives light, life, and instruction for our lives. Amen.
