Heart of Thanks

Scripture

Thank God in everything, no matter what the circumstances may be, be thankful and give thanks, for this is the will of God for you who are in Christ Jesus, the Revealer and Mediator of that will. -1 Thessalonians 5:18

Believers are inundated with circumstances daily. Whether favorable or unfavorable, no matter what we are facing, we are admonished to give thanks. There’s a difference between giving thanks for everything and giving thanks in everything. Because we don’t wrestle with flesh and blood, but with supernatural forces, not all circumstances are good. So, we don’t give thanks for them; however, while we’re dealing with that negative circumstance, we give God thanks in the midst. When we do this, we are recognizing God’s sovereign hand is in charge, and we trust that He is working for our good.

Beloved, if our minds were renewed about what to do in situations, we may find that we won’t dread the negative that comes our way. I’m not saying welcome hardships and trials, but Paul does tell us to consider it pure joy whenever you face trials of many kinds. (James 1:2-4). Do you know why Paul says this? Because God is the source, and if you are a Kingdom citizen, your dependence is on Him. Jesus told the disciples not to worry about their lives, what they would eat or drink, about their bodies, or what they would wear. The Father in Heaven already knows what they need. (Matthew 6:25). So instead of lamenting, give God praise that He’s already done it. Give Him thanks as you’re facing everything.

Giving thanks in all things is God’s will. This means that we can do it. Let’s be honest, it isn’t easy to give thanks in everything. However, because it is His will, as you do it, He will strengthen you to continue to do it. He will work it out for your good. Beloved, as you faithfully practice this Kingdom principle, God will help you overcome despair and anxiety by focusing on Him. Your trust in God will be strengthened, and your relationship with Him will deepen.

Prayer

Father, we thank you for your love and constant care for us. In everything we choose to give thanks, trusting that you are in control, and that this is your will for us. Amen.
