Scripture
If we boast that we have no sin, we’re fooling ourselves and are strangers to the truth. But if we freely admit our sins when his light uncovers them, he will be faithful to forgive us every time. God is just to forgive us our sins because of Christ, and he will continue to cleanse us from unrighteousness. -1 John 1:8-9
As someone who’s been exposed to church at an early age, this scripture has become very common in my hearing. I’ve heard Christians quote it to each other in encouragement. I’ve heard pastors speak of it from the pulpit, and I’ve heard it ring in my own spirit over the years, and I work out my soul salvation. We’re in a season where God is calling forth believers who will walk in union and fellowship with Him. To walk this journey with God in earnest, we must be honest with Him and with ourselves about the sin in our lives. According to the Greek Lexicon, to confess means to say the same thing as another. When we confess our sins, we are coming into agreement with God that we are sinners and acknowledging the reality of our sinfulness. Confession of sin is the way to find restoration and unbroken fellowship with God. It removes every obstacle from our union with Christ.
Any form of sin separates us from the unbroken fellowship with the Father. Our confession acknowledges God’s faithfulness to restore our intimacy with Him. Because Jesus paid the penalty for sin, in God’s justice, He cleanses every believer from unrighteousness. Jesus paid it all so that we could be reunited with the Father in love and fellowship. Sin will ultimately hinder that fellowship. Forgiveness and cleansing are essential to remain in fellowship with God.
Here is the beautiful truth about the entire process, Beloved. Unrighteousness in this scripture means the sins we’re not aware of. Confession cleanses known sin, but God’s faithfulness cleanses us from all unknown sin as well. So, let us confess our sins before the Lord today, and He will demonstrate His faithful love towards us. He will find us ‘not guilty’ based on Jesus Christ the Sin-Bearer. He will forgive us every sin and continue to cleanse us from all aspects of sin’s corruption.
Prayer
Father, we confess our sins to you. We acknowledge that we fall short and do not always live up to your will. We no longer fool ourselves into believing we are without sin. We ask for your forgiveness today. In Jesus’ name. Amen
