Much Is Required

Scripture

Every servant who does not know his master’s will and unwittingly does what is wrong will receive a less severe punishment. For those who have received a greater revelation from their master are required a greater obedience. And those who have been entrusted with great responsibility will be held more responsible to their master. -Luke 12:48

As we spiritually mature, we will be held accountable for what we receive from God. This scripture is a part of a larger conversation that Jesus was having with his disciples about being prepared for His return by being good stewards over what they’ve been given. In this context, it’s not just about resources, but spiritual gifts, knowledge, leadership, and divine revelation. Blessings, talents, knowledge, or influence create greater obligations to use them for good and serve God. God requires more from a person whose been walking with Him for years as opposed to someone who has just received salvation months ago. This discipleship journey is about stewardship, accountability, and responsibility.

Beloved, the Lord is the giver of all good things. He endows His children with good gifts, resources, talents, skills, and knowledge so that we can be a blessing to others in His Kingdom. Those with more will face greater demands from Him, and should they choose not to steward what God has given, their judgment will reflect their level of knowledge and opportunity received to pour out to others. I remember lamenting on how much there was to know about the Lord and His Kingdom to the Holy Spirit. I told Him that the more I learned, the more I realized that I didn’t know. His reply was, “Daughter, one day you will know. What will you do with the knowledge you'll have?” He was preparing me for the accountability that will one day be on my shoulders. Believers are held responsible for how they use what they’ve been entrusted with by the Lord. Beloved, what are you doing with what you’ve been given from God?

This scripture should not cause a believer to ask or desire less from God because of the responsibility of stewardship, but it’s a reminder we’re accountable for what we’ve been given. It is a privilege to be entrusted with revealed knowledge, gifts, talents, and skills from Him. If we’ve been given more, it means He trusts us with more. To that end, we’re responsible for stewarding what He’s given us. Whether it means giving our resources, time, and Godly wisdom to others.  The more influence you have, the higher the standard and the more will be required of you.

Prayer

Father, thank you for all the gifts and opportunities you have entrusted to us. Help us to be aware of our responsibility, use them wisely and generously. In Jesus’ name. Amen
