In Spirit and Truth

Scripture

God is a spirit, and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth. -John 4:24

Jesus provided the foundation for true worship. True worship is not about a location or ritual. It’s a genuine connection with God that comes from our hearts, aligning with His revealed truth. Our worship should be a response to the truth that has been revealed to our hearts about God. Beloved, this is why we must develop a relationship with the Lord. If you’ve been a believer for a significant amount of time, you may have realized that your intimate connection with the Father is the foundation of your walk as a Christian.

God is not confined to a physical place like a church. He is a spirit; therefore, our worship should transcend the four walls of the church. Our authentic worship is a response to His presence and His actions. It is about our personal connection to the Father rather than outward actions or traditions. What does it mean to worship in spirit? It means our worship should come from the deepest part of our true selves, brought to life by God’s Spirit. So that means true worship is a response to God’s Spirit inside of us. When we worship in truth, Beloved, we worship Him based on the reality of God’s nature. Meaning we worship because through our encounter with Him,  as He’s revealed that He’s all-powerful, all-knowing, He’s love, full of justice, mercy, and truth.

We also worship Him based on the revealed truth of His word. For instance, John 8:36 states, “If the Son therefore shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.” This scripture is true for all believers, but it’s not true in the hearts of all believers. However, when this word comes alive in the heart of a believer, they will worship God based on that truth and life that this scripture has brought to them. Beloved, God is not looking for ritualistic worship; He’s looking for those who will worship Him sincerely and hearts that are aligned with who He is. Worship in spirit and truth does not come from an arbitrary place. It comes from the heart of a believer who is in a true relationship with God. Worship from any other place is out of alignment with His will.

Prayer

Father, we want to be your true worshippers. Teach us to worship you in spirit and truth, to pour out our love and adoration with every breath.
