Longing for Him

Scripture

O God, You are my God. It is you I seek! For you my body yearns; for you my soul thirsts. In a land parched, lifeless, and without water. So I have looked for You in the sanctuary, To see Your power and Your glory.  -Psalm 63:1-2

I became a Christian when I was a child, and although I was a new creation then, I had to grow in the knowledge of this truth in my life. A few years ago, I found myself telling God, "Lord, I just want to be with you. I don't exactly want to die, but I just desire to be with you in your presence." At the time, I hadn't answered the call on my life, and I didn't understand nearly as much as I understand about Him now, but I longed to be with Him. He revealed to me later that it was my spirit longing for Him. It was also the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit in my life. I had an intense desire for God, and I could not explain why. Now, after so many years, I understand that what I was longing for was the love affair that He and I share today. Just like David, I was seeking Him, and my body thirsted and yearned to be in fellowship with Him. Though much of that longing is fulfilled, I'll never stop desiring Him. I'll never stop telling Him how much I love Him and long to sit in His presence. He's beautiful to me.

Many people are seeking satisfaction in different things in this world, but they don't realize that their longing is for God. They can't even explain the insatiable thirst for something, anything. They just want to be fulfilled, and so they search and search, but never apprehend the thing they are looking for. This world is like the dry and barren landscape, and many are longing to be fulfilled. As we come into the knowledge of God and understand who He truly is, seeking Him will be automatic. Seeking Him becomes a priority for us because the more we know Him, the more we love Him. The more we love Him, the more we long for Him.

David searched for God as a man looks for water in a dry land. There was physical desert around Him, but there was no desert in His heart. No matter what it looks like around us, let us continue to seek the Father. No matter what it feel like, continue to seek Him. Beloved, don't stop seeking and longing for Him. Remember, He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. (Hebrews 11:6)

Prayer

Father, we long to be in your presence. We hunger and thirst after your righteousness. Thank you for the love that you lavishly bestow upon us. We'll keep searching and longing for you. Amen

That is such a beautiful story and so true. I remember when I was seeking a husband, I had the typical long list of how I wanted my husband to be. After I made the list, I remember hearing Jesus say that I’m looking for Him because of the perfection of how my husband had to be. I didn’t give him that chance back then, but I am now. He deserves that and I deserve His love!
