What is the Prophetic?

His Heart Blogs will primarily be focused on the prophetic counsel of God concerning His people. Our blog posts will include insights on fellowship with God, the importance of prayer and intercession, warnings about the plan of Satan against the Body of Christ, and the benefits of cultivating a deep relationship with God. These posts are designed to encourage and equip people in their faith journey. Since these are prophetic blogs, I thought that I'd discuss the prophetic in the first blog.

Prophecy is a message from God. Prophecy is also a prediction. It’s a declaration of something future. In the Old Testament, God used prophecy to speak through vessels to judge, advise, direct, rebuke, warn, and give promises to His people. God used prophecy to tell His people that Jesus Christ would one day come,

Isaiah 7:14: “Therefore, the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”

This prophecy was fulfilled seven hundred years later when Jesus Christ was born.

Anyone who prophesies is speaking the heart and mind of God.

The voice of God is powerful and full of force. When the Lord speaks, things begin to manifest.  Prophetic ministry in the Body of Christ can reveal a person, a people, or a nation's purpose and shape their identity. We need the voice of God in our lives. The voice of God-flows out of the throne room of heaven towards the earth.  God speaks continually, but not all can hear Him.

God communicates with His people in the following ways:

Visions: The Holy Spirit sends images to our spirits. (Acts 1:7-18)

Dreams: Messages or movies are played out during our sleep. (Daniel 2:31-35)

Scriptures: The Holy Spirit will often give us prophetic revelation from the scriptures we read. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Impressions: When the Holy Spirit allows you to sense or know information. (Acts 14:9)

Trances: Trances are a lot like visions, but they occur when we are unaware of our surroundings. (Acts 10:9-23)

God is speaking to us all the time, but it is our responsibility to learn how to discern what He's speaking.

The purpose of prophecy is to reveal and communicate the heart of God. One way that God demonstrates His love for us is through prophecy. When someone receives a prophecy, God is using another to reveal His love by revealing His heart to them. Prophecy reveals the will of God for our lives. A prophetic word can bring strength and encouragement and help people grow in their faith.  Prophecy can also offer guidance on how to live one's life, make decisions, or prepare for future events. The purpose of the prophetic ministry is to speak the revelation of truth.

When someone prophesies to you or when you prophesy to someone else, the prophecy should edify, exhort, and comfort. People should feel the love of God and feel encouraged. The love of God should be felt through prophecy, even when a person is receiving correction from God.

"But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort”               -I Corinthians 14:3

To edify means to“build up,”. Prophecy should build up a person's faith and strengthen their relationship with God. Paul admonishes  Christians to build one another up. As believers, we should be intentional about lifting others and supporting them as they walk with the Lord. We assist them in the renewal of their faith and in having new courage to complete the work of the Lord.

To exhort means to bring courage to the life of the believer. When a believer is being exhorted, they are being strongly encouraged or are receiving counsel from the wisdom of God that comes from above (James 3:17). When someone prophesies, they are giving divine encouragement.

To comfort means to console. This kind of comfort comes from the Spirit of God (Holy Spirit) 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 states, "God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others.
