Forward Is the Only Direction

Scripture

“Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on… forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 3:12–14

Paul, one of the greatest voices in the New Testament, makes a stunning confession: he had not yet arrived. Though he wrote with depth, revelation, and spiritual authority, he openly admitted that he was still in process. This truth dismantles the illusion that Christian leaders — or any believer — have reached perfection. No matter our role in the Body of Christ, whether a new believer, seasoned minister, mother, father, or spiritual mentor, none of us have fully attained. We are all still pressing forward. We are all still being shaped. We are all still becoming. A tree is fully a tree the moment it breaks through the soil, yet it is far from its mature form. It must grow, endure seasons, and develop strength over time. So it is with us. At salvation, we become children of the Most High God — fully His, fully loved — yet still immature in our development. Growth takes time. And in that time, we will stumble, sin, struggle, and sometimes cause pain. But none of this changes our identity. The Holy Spirit is committed to completing His work in us daily, for the rest of our lives.

I used to believe that spiritual maturity meant reaching a point where I no longer struggled — a point where I had “arrived.” I would look at leaders and assume they were living in a realm of perfection I could never reach. But God had to teach me that growth is a lifelong journey, not a destination. I learned that I could be fully His and still be in process. I could be deeply loved and still deeply developing. There were seasons where I looked back too much — replaying failures, rehearsing mistakes, or longing for what I lost. But God kept inviting me to take my hands off the past and place them firmly on the plow. He reminded me that forward is the only direction for the believer. Not because we are perfect, but because we are being perfected.

Beloved, hear this clearly: God is not asking you to be flawless — He is asking you to be faithful. He is inviting you to release the weight of your past and step into the upward call that is already pulling you forward. You are being formed into the image of Christ right now, in real time, through real struggles, real victories, and real moments of surrender.And while you are being perfected, you are also called to encourage others to enter the same race. This is discipleship — not leading from perfection, but leading from pursuit. We press forward together. We grow together. We become together.
