Do not conform to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. -Romans 12:2
I didn't really understand how powerful our thoughts are until the Holy Spirit highlighted this truth through the situations in my life. Our thoughts are shaped through our past experiences, societal norms, encounters, and ultimately our familial influences. In turn, they shape the condition of our lives today because what we think directs our decisions. Good or bad, our lives are the sum total of the decisions we've made. Do you like the outcome, Beloved? Once we receive salvation, an inner overhaul has to take place. We become a new creation, and we must also allow the Holy Spirit to transform our thinking. Some believers became new creatures years ago, yet they carry the old mindset because they didn't allow the Holy Spirit to do the transforming.
As children of the Most High God and disciples of Christ, we are no longer who we used to be, so our minds must be renewed. Philippians 2:5 admonishes us to let this mind be in us, which was also in Christ Jesus. This means that not only does our inner man change to look like Christ, but our mindset changes to His as well. Our thought patterns are corrupted by worldly systems. This is where we conform because it's the only blueprint we've ever had. When we renew our minds, we are submitting to the Holy Spirit to show us how to align our thoughts with God's truth. There is no guesswork here, just submission because the Word of God tells us what to think. "Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." (Philippians 4:8).
Beloved, the goal of this mental transformation is to become attuned to God's will, discerning His desires and plans, and living them out. Remember, we aren't here to merely exist. We're here to fulfill God's plans for our lives. Just as He had good thoughts and plans for the Israelites in Jeremiah 29:11, He has good thoughts and plans for us today. We need only submit and discern. So, let us allow the Holy Spirit to audit our mindset and be transformed today.
Prayer
Father, we acknowledge that our thoughts have been shaped by the systems of this world, but we submit to your Spirit so that we can be transformed. Holy Spirit, help us align our thoughts with God's truth. In Jesus' name. Amen
