Songs of Thanksgiving

Scripture

Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. -Colossians 3:16

“You’re going to write psalms to Me to commemorate our relationship.” These words were spoken to my heart by the Lord one day as I was sitting in His presence. Before His declaration, I had never considered writing a psalm. I received what He had spoken to me, and I decided to allow Him to lead me in this venture. A psalm is a song or a poem that expresses the human experience in relationship with God. This scripture above encourages us to teach and encourage one another with songs and hymns, giving thanks to God. However, it first tells us to let the word of Christ dwell within us. This means Christ’s message in us should induce songs of gratitude to God.

According to the scripture, we are called to internalize and live by Christ’s teaching deeply. To achieve this, we must meditate on the Word of God so that it may dwell within us. It finds a permanent place in our hearts and minds. When the Word of God richly dwells in a person, it suggests full inhabitation of a person’s life. This indwelling Word brings spiritual understanding and guidance, which gives one the grace to instruct and correct fellow believers.

As a Word richly dwells on the inside of us, what flows out is worship. Because we meditate on the Word, it transforms our lives, and what bursts out of us is singing with a thankful heart, reflecting the joy of God’s grace in us. Therefore, from that intimate place with God come psalms, songs, and hymns that the world has never heard before. From this place, music will come from us that expresses thankfulness to God. I am not suggesting that we’ll all be gospel artists, but I am saying your heart will produce a song to the Lord, birthed out of a place of intimacy with Him. Should God create an opportunity for it to be shared, give Him the glory. Until then, allow Christ’s Word to produce worship from you to the Lord to commemorate your union with Him.

Prayer

Father, we want the Word of Christ to dwell richly in our lives. With your grace and wisdom, we will teach others your ways through songs of worship to you. In Jesus’ name. Amen
