Scripture
So there is a special rest still waiting for the people of God, for all who have entered into God’s rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world. So let us do our best to enter that rest. But if we disobey God, as the people of Israel did, we will fall. -Hebrews 4:9-110
I create to-do lists daily of the tasks that I need to complete or goals that need to be fulfilled in my life. I'm always on the go, physically and emotionally, and spiritually. Though there is nothing wrong with being on the go, it can open the door for anxiety, worry, stress, and unrealistic expectations for myself. The Holy Spirit reminded me of my spiritual formation. "Daughter, what are you being formed by?" He reminded me that sabbath should be to undercurrent in my life. He was not really referring to a physical rest, but rest in the Lord. While I am constantly working and striving, I need to be mindful that I am to find peace and assurance in His presence, sovereignty, and love. I should not live a life relying solely on my own efforts.
So, what does resting in the Lord look like? Resting in the Lord looks like trust and surrender. It's an act of faith on our part. It's the assurance in my heart that God controls everything in my life; therefore, I can surrender my anxieties, burdens, and even my to-do lists. I can let go of the constant need to strive and achieve. I am not advocating for not striving for achievement in your life. I'm encouraging you not to do it all on your own. We can trust that as we are working, God is also working behind the scenes. Resting in the Lord also looks like spiritual renewal. For me to rest in Him, I need to study His Word, stay in prayer and reflection, and commune with Him. When we spend time with Him in His presence, we may notice that our situations don't always change, but we change. We have peace that surpasses all understanding that guards our hearts and our minds. (Philippians 4:7). There is a sense of calm amid our trials and the assurance that He can do exceedingly abundantly, above all we can ask or think. (Ephesians 3:20). We find refuge in His presence and strength to continue in our journey.
Beloved, we don't have to do this alone. You can work hard in this life and rest at the same time. I believe this is the perfect balance in the life of a Christian. We are striving to achieve the vision He's given us for our lives, fulfilling our callings, exercising our gifts, building our lives, raising our families, all while resting in Him. Will you rest in Him today, Beloved?
