Scripture
Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God. -Ephesians 5:2
Jesus Christ is our ultimate example of self-giving love. His death on the cross was a sacrifice of love for the world, and it pleased the Father. We are called to be imitators of God; therefore, we are to display self-giving love to others. This kind of love is pleasing to the Father. What is self-giving love? It's selfless, unconditional love for others. When we love in this way, we prioritize the needs and well-being of others at our expense. It's the kind of love we give without expectation of payment in return. This is the kind of love that God lavishes upon us daily, and we are to live a life full of this kind of love. Our encounters with others should be extraordinary because we are displaying this kind of love everywhere we go.
This is a call to practical action in life as believers. Think about what a toddler does as they grow. They mimic the behaviors of their parents. We too are to do the same. When we love in this selfless way, we become representatives for God for those who don't have God in their lives. Through our encounters with people, they gain a glimpse of God and His beautiful nature. The question is, what do people glimpse when they interact with us?
Lavishing self-giving, sacrificial love upon people will prompt people to believe in God because they see His character displayed in our character. Beloved, understand this: God is not always looking for you to be someone's superhero. In many cases, it's the small encounters with people. For example, are you a good listener? What about showing random acts of kindness? Do you volunteer your time? Do you smile at people you pass on the street? Do you practice patience and empathy with those who are difficult to work with? Do you give gifts without the expectation of reciprocity? God just needs our steps in the right direction, Beloved. If you want the world to see Jesus, let them see you.
Prayer
Father, we admit that the kind of love you showed us, giving your life for us, doesn't always come naturally to us. Forgive us for not loving others the way you showed us to love. Help us to love you and grow in the knowledge of you and your word. Amen
