In Reverence

Scripture

The Lord God Most High is astonishing, awesome beyond words! He's the formidable and powerful King over all the earth. -Psalm 47: 2

The Lord our God is a King. He is king over all of the heavens and the earth. Psalm 24:1 declares: "The earth is the LORD's and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to him."  He is the sovereign and mighty king. I'm sure no one reading this will disagree. If these statements are true, then why do many believers mishandle His sovereignty? Why do we miss that He IS in fact a King? We tend to approach Him in such a cavalier way. It is customary in earthly kingdoms that, when the king is in the room, the people's posture is one of reverence. They bow in the king's presence. There is such care taken to show respect for the king's authority. Yet, THE KING doesn't always get the same courtesy as earthly kings.

There is a difference between intellectual knowledge and experiential knowledge. For my entire Christian life, I have known that God is king over all. I read it in the Bible, I heard my parents say it, I heard it preached, and I heard it from fellow believers. Because I heard it so much, I believed it. Then, I began to grow in the knowledge of God. What was once intellectual knowledge became experiential knowledge. As I consistently spent time in the presence of God, my posture towards Him shifted. The first time I truly felt His presence, I knew that there was an obvious difference between He and I. I knew He was perfect, spotless, good, righteous, a king. The closer I drew to Him and He to me, the more tender my heart became towards Him.

"Everyone who is called by My name, Whom I have created for My glory;I have formed him, yes, I have made him.” (Isaiah 43:7). We exist for the glory of God, yet at times we live life as if we were created for Him to serve us. "Lord, if you can work this situation out for me." "Lord, if you can just help me get this job" "Lord, if you can get me out of this storm." "Lord, if you can just help me get this car." There is nothing wrong with prayers of petition, but let not our only prayers be those of petition. Perhaps He allowed us to wake up one more day so that we could align our will to His and bring glory to His name? Have you considered asking Him, "Father, how can I bring glory to your name?"  before asking for things from Him? Our total posture should be that of servants, reverencing Him completely. Can we seek His face today before seeking what's in His hand?

Prayer

Father, we acknowledge your greatness, your majesty, and your holiness. We stand in awe of your glory. You are the God of all creation, and we are humbled before you. We acknowledge your perfect nature and our unworthiness. You are the source of everything good, and we bow in submission to you now, our King. We honor you, Lord. Amen
