Going Against The Grain

Scripture

"Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts."- Proverbs 4:23

Your internal narrative is the ongoing story you tell yourself about who you are. It shapes your self‑concept, influences your behavior, and ultimately drives your actions and the reality you live out. This narrative forms early—often through experiences that were either deeply encouraging or deeply painful—and because it becomes so ingrained, it can feel completely natural and unquestionable. But as we are being transformed into the image of Christ, that internal narrative often has to change. This is where surrender comes in. Scripture reminds us, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to destruction” (Proverbs 14:12). In other words, what feels natural or familiar isn’t always aligned with God’s truth. As you grow in relationship with the Father, you begin to recognize that the story you’ve been telling yourself may not match the story He is speaking over you. When that realization comes, you must be willing to go against the grain. His narrative—His truth about who you are—must become your new internal narrative.

Perhaps your internal narrative isn’t entirely negative—but is it aligned with God? Even a narrative that feels harmless or familiar may still fall short of His truth. That’s why there must be an intentional, personal surrender of our limited understanding so we can receive God’s higher perspective and purpose for our lives. Your inner narrative shapes your confidence and influences how you show up in the world. Because the Father sees from a vantage point far above our own, He works to transform us by replacing false or harmful narratives with the truth of His Word. But this transformation isn’t passive—it's a process we must actively participate in. We have to be willing to go against the grain of our old internal story. As our minds are renewed, we learn to replace defeating thoughts with the truth God speaks over us. His narrative becomes the one that defines us.

Beloved, take a moment to reflect on your internal narrative. Does it align with the direction God is leading your life? Does it reflect who He has called you to be? And if it doesn’t, are you willing to go against the grain to follow Him anyway? We must be intentional about the stories we tell ourselves. You have the power to choose your focus, Beloved. That choice can lead you toward a life aligned with God’s purpose, or toward a cycle of striving, self‑defeat, and self‑criticism.

Prayer

Father, help us align our internal narrative with your purpose and perspective for our lives. Amen
