True Fellowship

We saw it, we heard it, and now we're telling you so that you can experience it along with us, this experience of communion with the Father, and his Son, Jesus Christ. -1 John 1: 3

The word 'communion' in the text is also fellowship. The Greek word for fellowship is 'koinonia', which is likened to sharing a communion, a common bond and common life. One morning a few years ago, I laid in my bed in silence, and I could feel the presence of the Lord in my room. Because His presence encompasses Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, I knew I had the audience of the Trinity. I said, "I feel like you all accept me. It's as if I had been let in by You." It wasn't until later that I began to understand the depth of what I was saying. I had in fact been let into the relationship of love and fellowship between the Father and the Son. They, along with the Holy Spirit had already been in this relationship of love and fellowship. By the work of the Holy Spirit, I was invited to enter into the same fellowship.

The beauty of this is our shared life together. I get to share my life with Jesus and He shares His life with me. In fact, this is the truth for all of the saints. We have to recognize that we've been invited into the life of He who saved us. John also expresses to his readers "so that you can experience it along with us". People will come to experience a relationship with God through their relationship with other saints. Think about it, Beloved. Truly sweet and honest fellowship draws you to others and others to you. This happens when we have true fellowship with God and with His Son Jesus Christ. We are sharing our lives with God and He is sharing His life with us. Ultimately, we want everyone to experience the joy we are feeling from this communion.

I remember when God poured oil of joy upon my life. (see Hebrews 1:9). The more time we spend around Jesus, the more like Him we become. The fullness of joy is a result of our love relationship and shared life with Him. The joy and cheerfulness was based on my fellowship with God and His Son, not my circumstances. I say this because there are several external forces that threaten to steal my joy almost daily. However, our joy is not rooted in the things of this world, but in our relationship of fellowship and love we share in with God the Father and the Son Jesus Christ. If we ever lose our joy, it is a tremendous loss for us and we have to do everything we can to draw closer to God to reclaim it.

Beloved, know today that as a Christian, you have been invited into something so beautiful and precious: relationship and fellowship of love with God and His Son Jesus Christ. You've been invited to share your life with them and their life with you. Oh, sweet communion.

Prayer

Father how wonderful it is to be invited into sweet communion with you. We your people accept your invitation to share our lives with You and to experience the joy that comes from you sharing your life with us. We pray for more of your presence in our lives and ask that you teach us how to engage with you that we might draw others to you. In His name. Amen.
